Keiran Cantilina hails from Stewartsville, New Jersey. He was introduced to bell instruments during his university years, where he was a player of Cornell University's historic twenty-one-bell chime. During his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Keiran began studying the carillon with Dave Johnson at the House of Hope carillon in St. Paul. In 2018–2019 he studied carillon in Belgium—the cradle of world carillon culture—with Koen Van Assche on a scholarship from the Belgian American Education Foundation. He graduated from the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen and was a finalist in the Queen Fabiola International Carillon Competition held in 2019. Keiran is a Carillonneur Member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. He has a BS in biological sciences and an MS in bioproducts and biosystems engineering. He is a principal research engineer in biomedical engineering at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. Keiran is a member of the board of directors of the Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle and a frequent guest artist on the Alexander McGaffin Memorial Carillon.

The Alexander McGaffin Memorial Carillon, one of only 185 carillons in North America, is a musical instrument of 47 cast bronze bells located in the 140-foot-tall McGaffin Tower of the Church of the Covenant in the University Circle district of Cleveland, Ohio. The bells were cast by the Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry in Asten, the Netherlands, and the carillon was installed and dedicated in 1968. The carillon is played while seated at a keyboard (clavier) comprising batons played by the hands and pedals played by the feet. The connection between clavier and bells is entirely mechanical (no electrical assistance), and dynamics and expression are possible through variations of touch.

The Friends of the McGaffin Carillon in University Circle, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was formed in 2015 to preserve and restore the carillon and support the programming and upkeep of this extraordinary musical instrument. Learn more at www.ucbells.org.
